The Song of Aspremont

Units : Philixte. Literary, Philological and Textual Studies | ULB720

Description :

The project aims to repair a major lacuna in epic studies by offering a study and edition of the French corpus of one of the most
important chansons de geste in the Charlemagne cycle : la Chanson d'Aspremont. More precisely, the project will produce: a) a
thorough study of the manuscript tradition of the poem, from both material (codicological characteristics of manuscripts) and
philological (relations between witnesses) standpoints; b) an electronic edition of the complete French corpus; c) a printed critical
edition of the major versions of the work. The project will thereby not only make available important, previously unpublished
materials of interest to researchers in various disciplines (philologists, literary critics, and linguists, to be sure, but also art
historians, codicologists, historians of ponctation punctuation, etc.) ; it also aims to contribute an in-depth reflection on the
techniques for editing medieval texts, and to establish a model for similar endeavors. Researchers participating in the program - At
