The main goal of this study is to explore what are the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying hypnosis, suggestion and the placebo effect. We hypothesize that these three phenomena described so far as being underpinned by different mechanisms are in fact controlled by a set of common processes. We assume, moreover, that this process triggers the induction of states of consciousness in which mental representations of high level (e.g., beliefs) are able to modulate the processing of information in an unconscious and unintentional manner.
